The traditional New Orleans jazz that the Preservation Hall Jazz Band performs transports you to another era from the first note blown. On any trip to New Orleans it is a must that you attend one of the band’s daily gigs at the legendary Preservation Hall, an intimate venue that is the size of a Brooklyn living space. Preservation Box would better describe the 40+ capacity venue, but the setting is the perfect way to see the band.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band is in NYC to celebrate its 50th anniversary as a group. The celebration continues tomorrow at Carnegie Hall with help from a star-studded lineup of friends and performers including My Morning Jacket, Mos Def, Allen Toussaint and many more. As expected this show sold out immediately and was a super hard ticket to get. Thankfully the band decided to come up a week early and do a set of intimate performances called the Crescent City Stomp at the McKittrick Hotel/Manderlay Bar, which I was fortunate enough to attend last night.

If you haven’t been to the McKittrick Hotel it is an astounding five-floor mansion, which is the setting of the interactive, theatrical performance Sleep No More. This event just took place on the first two floors, which included the 1920s speakeasy Manderlay Bar. With its old-timey décor, it made for the perfect setting for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band performance.

I was front and center for this show, close enough that I was dodging Freddie Lonzo’s trombone as he played. Once the band started to play, the space transformed into the sweaty club scene of New Orleans. Beers in hand, the crowd danced and grooved to that Crescent City swing as the band performed tunes like “Shake It And Break It,” “Tootie Ma Is A Big Fine Thing” and “When The Saints.”

Later in the show the band was joined on stage by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James for a couple of songs, and we were even graced with the presence of the “Burlesque Queen Of New Orleans,” Trixie Minx, who did a little performance during one of James’s songs. Later in the band’s second set, Tao Seeger added guest vocals on a song, and the intimate show wrapped with the gospel classic “I”ll Fly Away.”

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, a quintessential New Orleans institution, discovered new out-of-town admirers after Hurricane Katrina, and it brought many of them along for a concert on Saturday night at Carnegie Hall to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Preservation Hall, at 726 St. Peter Street, started in 1961 as a place where longtime New Orleans musicians could play the city’s most traditional jazz. It gathered a core Preservation Hall Jazz Band that performs regularly at the hall itself, with personnel gradually changing through the years. Ben Jaffe, the bassist and sousaphone player who is the group’s current creative director, is the son of the band’s previous director, Allan Jaffe. Other band members including the drummer Joe Lastie, the trombonist Freddie Lonzo and the clarinetist Charlie Gabriel, come from multigenerational musical families.

After the devastation of New Orleans in 2005, jam bands, indie-rockers, and fellow long-running traditional groups supported and collaborated with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The largest project was “Preservation: An Album to Benefit Preservation Hall and the Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program,” a two-CD collection released in 2010. At Carnegie Hall, the Blind Boys of Alabama, the Del McCoury Band, My Morning Jacket, Steve Earle, Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards and Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) were on hand. So were the New Orleans-born musicians Trombone Shorty and Allen Toussaint, who sang a tribute to the band for putting “pride in your stride.”

While it’s a paradox that welcoming outsiders and trying out hybrids is a survival tactic for a deeply local tradition, that’s a fact of life for present-day New Orleans.

At Carnegie Hall, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band showed how easily it could hop from era to era. It could work like a rhythm-and-blues horn section or a tightly arranged little big band if need be, but it could also switch back into the polyphonic glories of vintage New Orleans jazz, in which nearly every instrument seems to improvise around the tune at the same time.

That’s what the band did on its own, in standards like “Bourbon Street Parade” (sung by its trumpeter, Mark Braud) — and, even more exuberantly, backing excerpts from the Trey McIntyre Project’s dance suite “Ma Maison,” with members in skeleton masks and harlequin costumes. The band also brought a New Orleans shimmy and wink to some of its guests: Tiffany Lamson of the Louisiana band Givers with “Just a Closer Walk With Thee,” and Ms. Garbus belting “Careless Love.”

The band was more somber for a doleful version of “St. James Infirmary” sung by Jim James of My Morning Jacket; the song then turned upbeat for a return of the dancers. For Mr. Earle’s “This City,” a tribute to New Orleans, the band deferred to his roots rock. But there was a dialogue between traditions when Mr. McCoury’s bluegrass band shared songs with Preservation Hall; clarinet and fiddle traded solos that stayed true to their own idioms, while the rhythm meshed.

A big finale filled the stage as the Blind Boys of Alabama; Mr. McCoury; and Preservation Hall’s saxophonist, Clint Maedgen took turns singing the gospel standard “I’ll Fly Away” backed by the night’s full roster. But after the guests cleared away, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band returned along with teenaged musicians from its Preservation Hall Junior Jazz Band, whose members get lessons from the elder band Musical Outreach. They played — of course — “When the Saints Go Marching In,” with an old-fashioned polyphonic swagger that promised continuity for another New Orleans generation.

The primary members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band are in New York City this weekend to celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary with a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall on Saturday. The roster of special guests includes My Morning Jacket, Del McCoury, Allen Toussaint, Trombone Shorty, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Mos Def, Givers and Tao Seeger.

The show is likely to receive considerable attention from the New York media. On Friday, the home page of the New York Times web sitefeatured a four-plus minute video snapshot of the band in action at Preservation Hall on St. Peter Street in New Orleans. The paper's coverage also includes a pair of sumptuous photos by Mark Peterson.

Trumpeter Mark Braud is misidentified in a video caption as “Mark Brand,” but otherwise the clip paints a flattering portrait of the multi-generational band. Several current members, including Braud, were not yet born when the Hall was founded in 1961.

If you do not have a ticket for Saturday’s show in New York, you’ll have a second chance come spring: The Preservation Hall crew plans to recreate its 50th anniversary celebration, complete with several of the same special guests, at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell. The Pres Hall celebration will close out the Gentilly Stage on May 6, the fest’s final Sunday, in the slot previous held by the now-disbanded Radiators.

Named after the French Quarter music venue Preservation Hall, the group has performed alongside artists ranging from Louis Armstrong to Robert Plant.
This week, fans and collaborators including rockers My Morning Jacket, folk singer Steve Earle, rapper Mos Def and bluegrass legend Del McCoury will join the band at a 50th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall.
amNewYork spoke with creative director and tuba player Ben Jaffee, whose parents founded Preservation Hall.
Is it challenging to carry on the legacy of Preservation Hall? It is. You spend a lot of time thinking about your decisions and the way they impact the musicians who play here and your audience. Then you have bigger responsibilities, because Preservation Hall has become a symbol of New Orleans' rich cultural history.
What do you wish more people knew about New Orleans jazz? One big misconception is that New Orleans jazz is old-time music or about re-creating something from the past. I liken our music tradition to our cuisine: The recipes for red beans and rice or gumbo haven't really changed, but you have people who bring new influences to them. To me, that's the ultimate statement, when you can take a tradition and breathe new life into it.
Why do you think the music of New Orleans has gotten so much attention the past few years? I believe it's almost singlehandedly a result of Katrina and what we went through. They saw people fighting for our lives and things that mattered to us and realized exactly how important New Orleans is. Also, our music kicks ass - none of this would survive if it wasn't great music.
Do you think Preservation Hall will be around in another 50 years? This is not only a celebration of the past 50 years, but about our future and where we are today. I can attest from playing all over the world that Preservation Hall makes people smile and have a good time. I feel like we could get everything figured out real quick if we could get everyone to a Preservation Hall concert.

When Preservation Hall opened in 1961, its purpose was to save traditional jazz. It was probably a decade late. Dixieland was on its second or third revival, while the rest of jazz was evolving frantically. From then until now, the music of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band stood perfectly still. The instruments and the repertory have barely altered in decades: tuba, trombone, banjo, clarinet; “Mood Indigo,” “St. Louis Blues,” “When the Saints Go Marching In.” It was considered backward music for tourists; it was Dixie Beatlemania. And yet. Fifty years later, there is no other place like Preservation Hall. It’s hot and uncomfortable, and no alcohol is served. The musicians change nightly — the original players are long gone — but the sound is the same. The band has been playing its own funeral for the past 50 years, and it shows no signs of dying.

Band director Ben Jaffe, the son of Preservation Hall founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe, has demonstrated how the band can grow while still staying rooted in the hall's famed jazz tradition, one Louis Armstrong once triumphed. With seemingly endless tours, music festival gigs, a starring role in Danny Clinch's documentary Louisiana Fairytale and performances alongside Pres Hall superfans My Morning Jacket, last year also saw the release of the album Preservation, the band's best-seller, showcasing its inimitable chops alongside the likes of Tom Waits and Pete Seeger. But 2011 wasn't the band's biggest year: the group enters 2012 celebrating its 50th anniversary at an all-star gig at Carnegie Hall with another roster of music stars — performers bowing to Pres Hall's evolving legend. Preservation Hall Jazz Band Throw Themselves A Party

Since 1961 the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been keeping the tradition of boisterous New Orleans jazz alive, one boogie-fortified, horn-blaring performance at a time.

One suspects that the Preservation gentlemen are constantly coming up with excuses to throw a party, but their current blowout seems especially justified. On Jan. 7 the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will celebrate their 50th "Golden" Anniversary with a performance at Carnegie Hall that's apparently several years in the making.

"I started thinking about the anniversary shortly after we celebrated our 45th Anniversary back in 2006," says Ben Jaffe, creative director and tuba player. "I've been laying down the groundwork for the show for almost 18 months. Ultimately, I want the evening to be a memorable night of music."

The Jazz Band started as a touring outlet for the group of musicians that gathered at New Orleans Preservation Hall, an unretouched, un-air conditioned building which has been around since 1812 and has previously served as a tavern and photo gallery. Jaffe's parents, Allan and Sandra, founded the band 50 years ago, and he credits Preservation's longevity to not mucking up a good thing.

"We're like a pot of red beans and rice. No matter what day of the week, no matter how many times you've eaten them... they're always delicious when the right person is cooking them," he says. "Preservation Hall, no matter where we travel in the world, we connect with our audiences. I don't know exactly what it is, but people universally can't sit still when we play. They have to move or dance or bounce or sing. That's something you still find in New Orleans today, people dance to jazz."

The Hall's brand of rice and beans has proven to be quiet durable and beloved.

For the Carnegie performance the Band will be joined by a wide spectrum of guests including My Morning Jacket, Mos Def, Allen Toussaint, Trey McIntyre Project, Steve Earle, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Del McCoury Band, Trombone Shorty, GIVERS, Blind Boys of Alabama, Tao Seeger and even actor Ed Helms.

"We have lots of friends who play lots of styles of music, the whole spectrum. I think that's one of the amazing about what we do. We all share a love, respect and deep appreciation for New Orleans music and culture," says Jaffe. "To me, it doesn't seem that strange. If Mos Def were alive 100 years ago, he'd be singing with Jelly Roll Morton! Artists have an honest respect for Preservation Hall. There aren't that many, if any, institutions to compare Preservation Hall to. We are directly connected to the first days of jazz."

The "Golden" 50th Anniversary show (taking place in their 51st year, technically, but let's not pick nits) is a big undertaking for Jaffe, but he says it's only the start of a year-long celebration.

"We have a whole year's worth of projects on the table. We recently opened a retrospective exhibit in New Orleans titled 'Preservation Hall at 50.' We are going to be recording this year as well as touring the country and the world," he says.

For all that hurricanes and oil spills can take away, tradition isn’t among them. At least not while institutions like Preservation Hall exists. After a series of commemorative shows at home, the famed jazz club’s house band is preparing to celebrate 50 years as the standard bearers for New Orleans jazz by doing what they do best: hitting the road for a special performance at Carnegie Hall in January. Until then, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is evangelizing other Big Easy musical traditions with their Creole Holiday tour, coming to SECCA in Winston-Salem this Friday. Below, Preservation Hall Cre- ative Director and tuba player extraordinaire Ben Jaffe, son of hall founder Allan Jaffe, waxes on NOLA holiday traditions influenc- ing seasonal music and how relationships formed during the recording of the band’s 2010 benefit album have shaped the institutions future.

Ben Jaffe: It’s a chance for us to share this very unique New Orleans experience with the audience, to celebrate the way we do there, which is with music and of course food. We can’t cook for everyone though unfortunately. What’s considered a tradi- tional Christmas celebration in other cities is a lot different than how we celebrate here. I mean, we still have all of our leaves on our trees. I’m eating a grapefruit right now that I picked from my backyard this morning. Eating gumbo, that’s always a tradition for us and my family always went swimming on Christmas Day. A lot of those little nuances are reflected in the music we play during the holidays.

Y!W: It seems it’s slowly getting easier to enjoy some of those traditions again.

BJ: You would think it’s not even the same city in many ways that it was six years ago. The city’s doing great. We’re experienc- ing what I like to think of as a renaissance of sorts. One of the things the hurricane did for New Orleans is that is brought so much awareness to our city that it created a huge influx of youth and artistic minds that bring a lot of new perspectives.

Y!W: Does that make your mission of preserving the city’s musical heritage a little muddier?

BJ: I don’t think so. The tradition that Preservation Hall is a part of is so intertwined into the fabric of our city that it can’t die. New Orleans without red beans and rice ain’t New Orleans anymore. We have certain things that make us who we are and one of those things and our con nection to the earliest days of American mu- sic. Whether it’s Fats Domino, the Meters or Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Preservation Hall, we all share a common language that only people from New Orleans understand. I think that’s one of the beautiful things about New Orleans and that it evolves. I definitely see people who come to the city absorbing the musical culture and also bringing their own influences. That’s one of the responsibilities of the torchbearers to understand that nobody’s a creative island.

Y!W: Preservation Hall has been really visible in other musical spheres since the benefit album. Is that because of opportunity or are you taking a more aggressive approach to putting the band out there?

BJ: After the hurricane there was a heightened awareness of exactly what it was that made New Orleans such an important cultural center. That’s something as a nation that we all feel connected to. I really think that every human being yearns for things that are special about our history. I think that New Orleans exemplifies a lot of things that we’ve lost in our country; this idea of family and community, this idea of children following in the footsteps of their parents, and of family businesses and businesses that have been around for hundreds of years I always look for the bigger message in what we do because you can just break it down and say that we’re just seven guys who play music, but at the end of the day, that’s not what we are.

Everyone in our band comes from a multi- generational musical family and actually there are guys in our band who are seventh- generation New Orleans musicians. Seven generations. Their families have been playing music in New Orleans since the 1850s. You can’t find that anywhere else.

Y!W: It seemed that the most fruitful partnership to come of the benefit album was with My Morning Jacket. What was it about working with Jim James that works so well?

BJ: The best thing to do is tell you about the first time I met Jim after he came to New Orleans to record on that benefit album. Maybe I have a different sensibility, but when I meet people I immediately know that there’s a connection. Jim and I immediately had a very, very deep connection when we met at Pres Hall. I knew that we listened to the same music and walked the same walk. We live in different worlds but we share an appreciation and respect for good people and elders and tradition. Jim is carrying on a great American tradition which is the rock tradition. And what a brave statement that is: to be afforded the opportunity by a band who could ask any group in the world to open for them, but say, “We want to bring the Preser- vation Hall Jazz Band into stadiums.”

In other words, it’s thoroughly soaked in Americana, that catch-all genre that pulls from traditional American roots music forms. So, it was a perfect song for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Del McCoury Band to make as the centerpiece of their stellar 2011 album, American Legacies. Despite all the superb versions of this song over the years, Pres Hall and the McCoury Boys virtually stamp this classic as their very own, offering up the definitive version to stand for the ages. Ben Jaffe leads the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which makes its home in a storied New Orleans venue when it isn’t touring the world. Jaffe, son of the group’s founders, marched in carnival parades while still in grammar school. Now a tuba player and bassist, he extends the group’s original mission: to keep the music of 1920s New Orleans alive and accessible to audiences, and to maintain the rawness sometimes rubbed off by the “Dixieland” movement and its genteel followers. The band appears at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Tuesday for a collaboration with dance group the Trey McIntyre Project. Besides his expected roots in musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Jaffe, 40, says he’s also inspired by Muhammad Ali’s resistance to the Vietnam War draft, Pete Seeger’s involvement with the Civil Rights movement and Andy Warhol’s redrawing of art’s map. “Where do you go,” Jaffe asks, “when there are no limits or boundaries?”

Preservation Hall Jazz Band: old time jazz from New Orleans - Cory Doctorow

Last year, I found myself in New Orleans for a rather epic birthday party. One place I knew I wanted to visit was Preservation Hall, (which I'd written about here), a legendary unamplified jazz club. It was everything I'd heard and more.
I bought the whole run of Preservation Hall CDs, and they've been in heavy rotation here. Of the bunch, my favorite is "Songs of New Orleans," and I always know it's going to be a good day when the random number generator smiles on me and shuffles a track from the double CD into my music player, especially if that track is Go to the Mardi Gras, which played about ten minutes ago and put a smile on my face that's certain to last the day through.
I've just noticed that there's a new(ish) Preservation Hall Jazz Band CD, American Legacies, which, alas, I can't say anything about, because the Amazon MP3 store won't sell it to me (I'm in Germany and my credit card is registered in the UK, so they shut me out).

PRESERVATION HALL’S 50^TH ANNIVERSARY

The Louisiana State Museum launches a major exhibition celebrating the 50^th anniversary of Preservation Hall on November 4 at the Old U.S. Mint.

Co-curated by Preservation Hall and the Museum, Preservation Hall at 50 will tell the story of this New Orleans music landmark from the early 1960s to the present through artifacts, archival and contemporary photographs, film and audio clips, interviews and oral histories.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Rebirth Brass Band, The Preservation Hall All-Stars ,The Roots of Music, and The Preservation Hall Junior Jazz & Heritage Brass Band will perform on Friday evening, November 4 as part of a music-filled grand opening benefitting the Louisiana Museum Foundation, the Museum’s non-profit support organization. More than 500 guests are expected. Tickets are $50 advance and $60 on the day of event and available through the Louisiana Museum Foundation at 504.558.0493.

Preservation Hall at 50 will open for public viewing on Saturday, November 5 at 10 a.m. and will run through 2012.

Highlights include large color images of today’s Preservation Hall musicians by art photographer Shannon Brinkman matched with oral histories recorded by radio documentarian Eve Abrams. Brinkman and Abrams are co-authors of Preservation Hall, published in March by LSU Press.

Adding wider historical context, the Museum will display iconic objects from its collection – including Louis Armstrong’s first cornet – and instruments played by Preservation Hall jazz greats such as clarinetist George Lewis and bassist Alcide “Slow Drag” Pavageau.

Also represented are works by two visionary artists associated with Preservation Hall, French Quarter painter Noel Rockmore (1928-1995) and folk artist Sister Gertrude Morgan (1900-1980).

The Preservation Hall exhibition is part of ambitious long-range plans to establish the Old U.S. Mint as a center for live music and music history.

In a joint project of the Museum and the U.S. National Park Service, a new $4-million performance space will open on the Mint’s third floor on November 12. The Museum will use the space for evening lectures, solo and small group concerts and special events, while the National Park Service will use it for daytime programming for the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.

The Museum also plans to install a new permanent exhibition exploring Louisiana’s rich musical heritage in late 2013.

Fifty years ago, Allan and Sandra Jaffe founded Preservation Hall in the heart of New Orleans' French Quarter in an attempt to preserve and celebrate New Orleans jazz music and its musicians. They intended to stay in the Big Easy during the civil rights movement of the 1960s before moving on, but fell in love with the city and never left.
Fifty years later, their 40-year-old son and tuba player, Ben Jaffe, serves as director of the venerable musical institution and its touring Preservation Hall Jazz Band (PHJB), which marches into town Friday for a concert at Drake University. Jaffe, a second generation New Orleanian, is a prime example of how fully integrated music is in the culture, communities and families of New Orleans. In short, it's in his blood.
"Music in New Orleans isn't something separated; it's part of our church services, funeral processions and carnival celebrations. It's something you either are or you are not," said Jaffe over the telephone from his office at Preservation Hall, which first opened its doors in 1961.

Jaffe, who joined the touring PHJB the day after he graduated from Oberlin College in 1993, said that, regardless of his parents' affiliation with the New Orleans music scene, he would have become a musician. Yet it is apparent that his deep reverence and consciousness of PHJB's greatest attributes is the result of his upbringing and environment.

It's time for the Family Fair at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art!

This Saturday, August 20th, the Preservation Hall Junior Jazz and Heritage Brass Band will be performing at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (located at 925 Camp Street). The group will perform at 2pm as part of their Family Fair festivities. The event is free and open to the public and will also feature Dave James of Young Audiences, Calliope Puppets, as well as Teen Docents Puppet Theater. (New Orleans, LA) From August 24 to October 9, 2011, the Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University presents Jazz People: New Orleans Portraits by Lee Friedlander, curated by Newcomb Art Department faculty member Stephen Hilger. The works in Jazz People, thirty-nine black and white photographs from New Orleans in the 1950s and
1960s, are drawn primarily from Tulane's William Ransom Hogan Archive of New Orleans Jazz with additional images on loan from the collection of Allan and Sandra Jaffe, the founders of Preservation Hall. "Lee's photographs embody a visual encyclopedia of
early New Orleans jazz that is unprecedented," stated Preservation Hall Creative Director Ben Jaffe. As Allan and Sandra's son, the young Jaffe grew up witnessing performances by many of the legendary musicians depicted in Friedlander's work.

When The Del McCoury Band teamed up with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to record the album American Legacies, the merging of the two bands represented more then just a simple musical collaboration. The union brought together two groups who serve as the ambassadors of their respective genres, stewards of American music heritage. Over the years, beyond being of the foremost musicians in their fields, both The Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band under the direction of Ben Jaffe have taken on roles tasked with spreading the legacies of bluegrass and New Orleans Jazz music. Del McCoury has not only spread bluegrass to the younger generation (quite literally) through teaching and playing with his own sons, but he has participated in countless collaborations throughout the festival circuit and embraced the various derivations of traditional bluegrass such as newgrass and the jambands. Similarly, Ben Jaffe and Preservation Hall have reached new audiences by incorporating New Orleans Jazz into collaborations with My Morning Jacket, Ani Difranco and Tom Waits, among others.
In what was undeniably one of the greatest honors I’ve ever had as a writer, I sat down with both Del McCoury and Ben Jaffe at the Ameritania Hotel just around the corner from the Ed Sullivan Theater right before the bands took the stage to tape their performance for the David Letterman show later that night. In speaking with Del and Ben, it takes all of about five seconds to see why everybody wants to play music with them. They radiate charisma and come across instantly as truly genuine people who are happy to be doing what they do. What follows is an intimate conversation that touches on the cross-fertilization of the two genres of music, the surprising similarities between New Orleans Jazz and bluegrass, the importance of family, and honoring one’s heritage.

Hidden Track: I was going to ask this to both you, but before Ben gets here, Del, when you were first starting out in music and learning your chops what led you to your style, to bluegrass, and to your instrument?

Del McCoury: I learned to play the guitar when I was about nine. My brother taught me to play. When I was about 11, he bought a record of Earl Scruggs and when I heard him play that three finger style banjo, it turned a light on. I thought, “That is what I want to do!” I learned it, and I played it until I went to work for Bill Monroe.
He needed a guitar player and a lead singer, which I thought, “I don’t know if I can do this?” I had played with him here in New York City, my first time in this town. Later, I went down to Nashville, because he offered me a job, and when I got there he still didn’t have a lead singer and guitar player. All along I think he was thinking that of me, because a lot of his musicians through the years could play different instruments and sing.
Anyway, he put me on that path instead of the path I wanted to go on, which was playing banjo and singing harmony. I could sing all the harmony parts. I was kind of a natural tenor singer and I sang baritone in a lot of bands, but when he got me to play guitar, it was a pretty big challenge, because I had to learn to play all the songs he had recorded and wanted to play at the shows. He told me, “You know, if you can make the grade doing this, you’ll like it better.” I remember thinking, “I believe he’s wrong there,” but he was right. So that’s what got me here on this path. It was actually Bill Monroe.

This is a link to pictures of the Los Trancos Hills Marching Band parade in Palo Alto on July 4th, 2011. Throughout the 70's and into the 80's, the Los Trancos would march into Frost Amphitheater on July 4th to open the annual Preservation Hall show. Earlier that day, I would go with my dad to the July 4th parade in Palo Alto and march with the Los Trancos Band. They were great times. It was amazing to go back with my pal David Silverman and march with the Los Trancos Band again. I got to reunite with some of the old timers who knew my dad and remembered me when I was little. - Ben Jaffe

Del McCoury’s bluegrass group and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band did the proper adult thing on Wednesday night: they resolved their differences, surrounded by expensive claret.
On “American Legacies” (McCoury Music), their recent joint album, they’ve explicitly made their traditions melt together. This is an old story. Louis Armstrong did it with Jimmie Rodgers; Wynton Marsalis did it with Willie Nelson. The pairing is not a stretch, though it can seem to be. For the first half of the 20th century bands from putatively different traditions implicitly understood their common origins and points of crossover. And their repertories overlapped. Type in the song title “Corrine, Corrina” on YouTube and you’ll get Red Nichols’s jazz version, Bo Carter’s string-band blues version, and various shades of country into rock ’n’ roll from the Collins Kids, Ray Peterson, Brooks & Dunn, Big Joe Turner, and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Or you could do the same with “Milenberg Joys,” which the combined bands played near the end of their set at City Winery on Wednesday. It’s a song that Mr. McCoury — raised in the Black Mountain region of North Carolina — knew because he used to play it in Bill Monroe’s band, and the jazz group knew because Jelly Roll Morton wrote it. (The dynastic Preservation Hall band, from New Orleans, was founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe, parents of its current tuba player and director, Ben Jaffe; it has no original members, but the current lineup is full of familial and professional ties to the group’s past.) In that song, and in a few other places, the musicians did right by the audience: they made music subtly pan across the stage, from one band to another, so you could hear the difference in rhythmic temperament, whether in grooves or in solos.

On paper it still sounds preposterous but in practice, The Del McCoury Band's partnership with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (PHJB) must have been made in paradise--or at least New Orleans' French Quarter.
Then again, both traditional jazz and bluegrass depend plenty on solo and group instrumental mastery and improvisation, and the musicians in the two bands--12 in all--are tops on all counts. At City Winery last Wednesday night, the Grand Ole Opry's McCoury Band and the house band of New Orleans music's Opry counterpart played together, opposite each other, and in various combinations--surprisingly seamlessly.

Check out these sweet videos from our rehearsal at the nationally acclaimed Symphony Hall in Boston!

Sleepover Shows are three song sets of acoustic or stripped down versions performed by bands that we love as they make their way through Boston. Though it started as something we did when bands needed a place to crash on the night of their shows, we now mostly film the sessions before or after a show and let the bands find their own ways home (though the offer still stands).
Basically, we try to use our spaces as creatively as we can. We’ve filmed in the back seats of cars, on top of playground equipment, in doorways and alleys, in bathtubs and stairwells. We try our best to get the bands to take their music outside of the confines of the studio and have some fun.
And that’s the point: to capture some great music that maybe isn’t always as polished, but shows these artists having a good time doing what they love. We’re doing what we love too, and hope you enjoy the videos!

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and bluegrass bandleader Del McCoury are scheduled to appear together on “Late Night with David Letterman” on July 19 ~~July 20~~. The bands will also perform that night at New York’s City Winery.

The relationship between McCoury’s band and Preservation Hall has proved to be a fruitful one. It grew out of Preservation Hall creative director and tuba player Ben Jaffe’s desire to expand the band’s reach and explore common ground with other forms of roots music. Earlier this year, Preservation Hall released a joint album with McCoury called “American Legacies.”
On Mardi Gras, McCoury even paraded through the streets of the French Quarter with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Other recent outings by Preservation Hall have found the band performing at the Grand Ole Opry – rarely, if ever, has a tuba ever appeared on the most hallowed stage of country music – and throughout the massive Bonnaroo Music Festival in June in Tennessee. One of those Bonnaroo gigs involved sitting in with My Morning Jacket, the much-acclaimed rock band with whom Pres Hall has previously toured and collaborated with at the Voodoo Experience and Jazz Fest.

The relationship between Jaffe and company and My Morning Jacket is the subject of “Louisiana Fairytale,” a new documentary by photographer Danny Clinch. “Louisiana Fairytale” will be screened at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art on July 23 and during the New Orleans Film Festival in October.

WHO HE IS: The banjo and guitar player toured for several years with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and currently works with the students of the Preservation Hall Junior Jazz & Heritage Brass Band.

WHY YOU'VE HEARD OF HIM: Over the years, Le Blanc played with Sun Ra, Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Bo Diddley and Ellis Marsalis.

WHAT'S HE UP TO: Le Blanc is directing the Junior Preservation Hall Band and working on his first inspirational/spiritual recording. He said fans can expect a little something different from him. Surprise guests on the CD include the Yellow Pocahontas Mardi Gras Indians.

WHERE TO SEE HIM: On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Le Blanc will lead the Preservation Hall Junior Jazz & Heritage Brass Band at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art's free family fun day in celebration of Preservation Hall's 50th anniversary and Ogden's current exhibit "Art & Jazz: Preservation Hall at 50." Q: How long you been working with the junior band program?
A: A little over eight months. We've been working on getting the kids together. In New Orleans, it's hard to keep up with the kids because of their musical commitments at school, too.

Q: What's the best part about working with them?
A: Just the music, passing on to them the traditional music of New Orleans. To see them play the songs from the 1920s -- "Has Anybody Seen My Gal?" and "Sunny Side of the Street" -- that's cool.

Q: Were you a part of the 50th anniversary celebration?
A: I haven't been touring with the group, but I was at the event and it was like a huge family reunion. Such a wonderful celebration.

Q: Will we see any of the junior members at the Hall one day?
A: Oh, yeah. Some of them have already played there. Many of them go to NOCCA and are very talented. The goal of the program is all about preparing the next generation of musicians.

It's Bonnaroo Time! PHJB and The Del McCoury Band continue the "American Legacies" Tour, this time in Manchester, Tennessee for the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. While on tour together in Lawrence, Kansas the McCoury Bus broke down and Del's band hopped on the PHJB Bus. While on the bus, Clint Maedgen, Ronnie McCoury, and Alan Bartram jammed a bit and the result - Bonnaroo (Feel The Magic)- The Official Theme Song for Bonnaroo!!!

Here's the official word from Bonnaroo:

"Superfly Presents and AC Entertainment are excited to announce that Bonnaroo now has an official theme song. The song, titled "Bonnaroo (Feel the Magic)," was written by the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. This will hereby serve as the festival's National Anthem, its howl of joyous pride, its exclamation of exuberance, its own rally cry of sorts.

The video below was actually captured the third time this song was ever performed by the artists and was taken backstage at a gig on their "American Legacies Tour" that Del McCoury and Preservation Hall are currently in the midst of. Legendary hip-hop producer Mannie Fresh (Lil' Wayne, Juvenile) is currently working on a hip-hop remix of the song.

This is the way the song was written as recounted by Preservation Hall Creative Director and Tuba Man Ben Jaffe:

"Del's bus broke down outside of Chicago at 3am following our 'American Legacies' gig. Pres Hall turned around, picked up the stranded McCoury's on the side of the highway in the snow. Once aboard the bus, Ronnie McCoury presented the idea that the two groups work together to create an original Bonnaroo theme song in celebration of the 10th year anniversary. The melody and lyrics came to Preservation Hall vocalist Clint Maedgen as if the song had already been written. An hour later, the first version of it was recorded on an I-Phone and this video was recorded backstage the following night."

The festival is very proud of its new theme song, and considering that Del and the McCoury's performed on the very first Bonnaroo as well as the festival's close connections to New Orleans, this song could not be more appropriate."

Tom Sancton, meet Tom Sancton

On April 19 last year, the curtains at Tulane’s Dixon Hall slid open to reveal the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in the midst of the opening strains of “Bourbon Street Parade.” The stage was mocked up to resemble Preservation Hall; a projection screen hung overhead.

The occasion was the premiere performance of Song for My Fathers, a stage show adapted from Tom Sancton’s 2006 memoir of the same name. Set in the 1960s, the book tells the story of a middle-class white boy’s apprenticeship at the feet of some of New Orleans’ most famous black jazzmen. Preservation Hall is a constant refrain in the book, a focal point in the musical world Sancton describes, and the backdrop of many key scenes. It was there, one evening in the spring of 1962, that he first heard George Lewis play the clarinet. “[He] was my first inspiration, my teacher, my idol,” Sancton says.

Song for My Fathers will return for five nights this May (the 13th, 14th, 15th, 21st and 22nd) at Le Chat Noir. “Dixon Hall holds 1,000 people and we just about filled it,” says Sancton. “I think the Chat Noir holds 150. It’s a smaller stage, smaller house; it’s more intimate.”

Re-staging the show has been a goal for Sancton ever since the original performance, but it took a year for everything to fall into place. The performance will coincide with the Hall’s 50th anniversary. “It’s one of the ways of celebrating the Hall’s history,” he says.

The performance dramatizes his memoir through the use of archival photos and video, projected behind him as he speaks. The audience watches a montage of photos taken from ’60s second lines while he describes his early days as a marching band clarinetist, or listens to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band perform tunes mentioned in the text. Sancton tells a story about Harold Dejan’s Olympia Brass Band; the group had been hired for a funeral procession, but the widow didn’t want to pay full price. So Dejan declared that she’d be getting a “two-block funeral”. As the procession marched on without them, the Olympia struck up “I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead, You Rascal You.” As Sancton recounts the story, the tune is taken up by the band onstage.

At one point, Sancton recalls his very first clarinet lesson with George Lewis. As he speaks, the scene is dramatized behind him in pantomime. When I reported on the original “Songs” production last April, Sancton was in the process of recruiting a young clarinetist to perform in the scene. As an amateur player with a passing resemblance to photos of young Tommy, I ended up in the show. Tom taught me “Corrine, Corrina,” the first tune he ever learned from Lewis. In the lesson scene, Lewis teaches Sancton that song, phrase by phrase, call and response.

In March, Sancton and the band put on a miniature version of the show in Minneapolis. “I was really curious if it was going to work outside of New Orleans,” says Ron Rona, the show’s director, better known as Ronnie Numbers in the New Orleans Bingo! Show. “Tommy did a terrific job; that really iced it for me.”

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band will be on tour in May, and so Sancton has had to assemble a new group. This time, the role of George Lewis will be filled by Joe Torregano. “What I wanted was to get people who were good representatives of the style and the culture that I talk about in Song for My Fathers,” he says. “People with links to Preservation Hall, or links to the earlier musicians.” The group will include Ronell Johnson, Lars Edegran, Frank Oxley and Gregg Stafford, musicians with strong allegiances to the Hall. “Gregg would second Kid Thomas when Kid Thomas got very old,” Sancton recalls.

Five years have passed since Sancton’s memoir was first published. “My wife always asks me, why do you keep going over this story?” he says. While he’s been involved in other projects (including a new record with Lars Edegran titled City of a Million Dreams) Sancton continues to return to the story of his childhood: “It’s a story that bears telling again and again in ways that are deeper than all the clichés we have about New Orleans. The tourist image of happy Dixieland jazz musicians sitting on the levee—I don’t like that at all. I think the story we tell is deeper, broader, more human, more meaningful than the image people have about jazz. I won’t stop telling this story, as long as people want to hear it.”

About Tangiers Blues Band:

The Tangiers Blues Band was formed in 1998 after guitarist Chris Scianni (Dangerman, Echobrain with Jason Newsted) and drummer Dave Borla (Dangerman, Echobrain) met photographer/harmonica player Danny Clinch and discovered their mutual love for blues music. The first Tangiers Blues Band jam session took place on Thanksgiving night that year with other musicians and friends, including Huey from the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, King from Cooley High, Mick Jones from Foreigner and tennis palyer/guitarist John McEnroe. The original line-up was formed after that with Chris (guitar), Dave Borla (drums), Danny (harmonica), Huey (lap steel), King (vox and guitar) adding their long time friends Dave Sellar (bass) from Darla Hood and Peter Levin (keys) who had played in various bands in New York City and currently tours with The Blind Boys of Alabama.

The TBB line-up changes from show to show, with a deep rotation of musicians they have known and jammed with for many years, and in many different configurations. In addition, they have many “special guests” who will sit in with them for a night when they are around including G-Love, Phil Lesh, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Charlie Giordano (Bruce Springsteen) and Chris’ father, Joseph Scianni. The line-up on the TBB studio recordings consists of Chris, Danny, Pete, King and Dave Sellars with Jon Graboff (Ryan Adams and The Cardinals) on lap and pedal steel guitars and Mo Roberts (Shemeka Copeland) on drums. The recording was done in one day at Moon Palace Studios, mixed and produced by Tim Latham (Lou Reed, Tribe Called Quest) a long time friend of all the guys.

Shannon McNally was born and raised on Long Island, New York but has spent most of her adult life traveling and living all over North America. After graduating college with a degree in Religious Anthropology she followed Los Lobos out to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. She quickly signed with Perry Watts-Russell to Capitol Records/ EMI. />.. Rolling Stone Magazine gave her debut album released in January of 2002, Jukebox Sparrows (Capitol Records), 3 1/2 stars. Jukebox Sparrows also spawned the AAA radio hit “Now That I Know,” which appeared on the ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ soundtrack. She teamed up with Ryan Adams’ sideman Neal Casal around the same time for a collabrative project called ‘Ran On Pure Lightening’. Her song “Pale Moon” from was picked up by Putamayo Records as the first track on their American Folk Album. />.. In 2000 she moved to New Orleans. ‘The city summoned me. It called me into it’s depths and it devoured me’. It was here that her writing’s innate earthy-end-of-the-world-defiance took on a weight and pathos which ultimately defined the mood and message of her 2005 release ‘Geronimo’ on Back Porch Records (EMI). Produced by Charlie Sexton, the record got a lot of strong support at AAA radio and on Satelite Radio. McNally toured extensively behind it from 2005-2007, doing national tours with a band and as a solo performer. During this time she also recorded a live record called ‘North American Ghost Music’ as well as a second album with long time friend and producer Charlie Sexton called ‘South Side Sessions’. />.. Unable to return to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina Shannon settled into North Mississippi with her husband and daughter. Her newest project is called ‘Coldwater’. It was recorded with Jim Dickinson at his Zebra Ranch Studio just before his passing. The record features Shannon’s regular touring band called Hot Sauce; they are Jake Fussell, Eric Deaton and Wallace Lester. />.. McNally has toured and done shows with Willie Nelson, Stevie Nicks, John Mellencamp, Charlie Sexton, Son Volt, Ryan Adams, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Derek Trucks, Rail Road Earth, Rufus Wainwright, Levon Helm and Lou Reed. Tremè Brass Band plays the music of a people in New Orleans who celebrate life with a Second Line celebration or mourn a person's death with a Jazz Funeral. "Art & Jazz:Preservation Hall at 50" Exhibit opens next week at the Ogden!

On April 28, 2011, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art/University of New Orleans will open Art & Jazz: Preservation Hall at 50. The exhibit is an insider's and impressionistic view of this famed New Orleans jazz hall. Founded in 1961 by Sandra and Allan Jaffe, Preservation Hall and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band have exposed the world to traditional New Orleans jazz, and have played an integral part in keeping this music and its traditions vibrant and relevant in the 21^st century.
The French Quarter building that is Preservation Hall housed many businesses and residents over the years, including a tavern during in the 1800s, “Pops” Whitesell's photo studio, author Erle Stanley Gardner, and an art gallery. It was during the years of the art gallery that then owner, Larry Borenstein, began holding informal jam sessions for his close friends. Out of these sessions grew the concept of Preservation Hall.
This exhibition delves into the Jaffe family and Preservation Hall archives, showcasing the roots of the art inspired by the hall and its musicians, including work by Noel Rockmore, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Lee Friedlander and Barry Kaiser. Personal photographs of the Jaffe family, including Ben Jaffe (currently the Creative Director of the hall and the band) and Preservation Hall musicians illustrate how they are intertwined with each other and the French Quarter. Vintage music instruments show the wear and tear of a musician's life, while audio recordings and film document a time and place that has passed, but also embraces the hall's and band's contemporary roots.

This exhibition hopes to bring viewers an innovative and personal look at a music hall and band that continues to play an important cultural role in the city and the world.

Art & Jazz: Preservation Hall at 50 is the first in a series of exhibitions celebrating Preservation Hall's 50^th anniversary. This fall, the Louisiana State Museum will open a retrospective about the hall and the band in the Old U.S. Mint in New Orleans.

When the saints go marching in the holler

The intersection of bluegrass and jazz isn’t exactly a bustling one, but the successful fusions of the past – Bela Fleck’s genre-defying albums, David Grisman’s Dawg music – have placed a heavy emphasis on improvisational interplay and breakneck solos. So the meeting of Dixieland revivalists The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and bluegrass traditionalists The Del McCoury Band is more than a little perplexing and intriguing. Both have had their forays into adventurous musical waters, but both are primarily known for their excellence in strict, formal, and relatively hidebound genres. Foggy mountain breakdown on Basin Street, anyone? Just how does that work again?

As American Legacies amply illustrates, the answer is that it works just fine. McCoury, who started his five-decade career playing with the original bluegrass iconoclast Bill Monroe, has shown an increasing elasticity and flexibility of late, touring with Phish and recording with Steve Earle, and here he seamlessly blends his bluegrass band with the brass and rhythm section of PHJB...

The 47-minute American Legacies album – starring the Preservation Hall Jazz Band & the Del McCoury Band – is collaboration in the truest essence of the word and a confluence of two of America’s greatest musical inventions, bluegrass and jazz. Some might believe bluegrass and jazz are miles apart but they share numerous similarities and the two genres have come together in quite a few ways over many decades. First, both styles require dazzling virtuosity, respect for the past and devotion to well-defined creative forms. Secondly, jazz and bluegrass (and thus country) have had extensive, continuing connections. Certain songs have become standards in both musical circles, while several artists have combined country/bluegrass shadings with jazzy swing, from Bob Wills to Louis Armstrong and from Chet Atkins to Herb Ellis.

American Legacies mines tradition and listeners could not ask for better interpreters than the Preservation Hall Jazz Band & the Del McCoury Band. The thin line between jazz and country music has too seldom been crossed over the years, notable exceptions being Louis Armstrong's 1930 trumpet contribution to Jimmie Rodgers' "Blue Yodel #9"; the hot soloists and swinging rhythm sections in Bob Willis' and Spade Cooley's bands; Merle Haggard's 1973 LP I Love Dixie Blues; and Wynton Marsalis' recent hookups with Willie Nelson. For the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, today's most prominent purveyor of traditional New Orleans jazz, to team up with the Del McCoury Band, one of the most popular bluegrass groups on the planet, may seem odd, but both genres have firm grounding in blues and place high value on improvised instrumental virtuosity. Last year Del McCoury appeared on The Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s star-studded benefit record Preservation singing “After You’ve Gone.” Despite the spirited contributions on that release from both old and new-guard artists (Merle Haggard, Steve Earl, Jim James, Andrew Bird, etc.), McCoury’s weathered “high-and-lonesome” bluegrass voice finds immediate and arresting chemistry with the now 50-year-old Preservation Hall jazz tradition. There must have been a lightning-rod moment sometime during that session where both parties knew that an additional album project was an inevitable necessity. American Legacies is the happy result. The record elaborates on the formula that worked so well on the initial team-up, but this time brings Del McCoury’s band to the party completing the crossover circuit and proving once and for all that ideological and traditional borders between bluegrass and jazz are not only mutable but are largely imaginary.

American music is funny that way. One doesn’t have to go back very far before the faded musical familial lines between estranged cousins become undeniably distinct. In this way, when Del McCoury and his band start playing with the musicians in the Preservation Hall at New Orleans, there is an easiness to the collaboration – one due, surely, to the talent of both bands, but also with a sense of ease that sounds and feels like musical reunion...

In continuing celebration of their Golden Anniverary, Preservation Hall will present five nights of the unique multimedia stage production based on Tom Sancton’s widely acclaimed book of memoirs Song For My Fathers: A New Orleans Story in Black and White at Le Chat Noir on May 13-15 and May 21 & 22. Directed by Ron Rona (The New Orleans Bingo! Show) and produced by Preservation Hall’s Creative Director Ben Jaffe, Song For My Fathers features live readings by Sancton, historic video and photography and live musical interludes featuring The Preservation Hall All-Star band. Song For My Fathers is an insider’s account of a special moment in New Orleans cultural history: the so-called revival of traditional jazz, the phoenix-like return from the ashes of the old players and their music, spearheaded by the founding of Preservation Hall in 1961. Published in 2006, the book was hailed as a “newly minted classic” by the Times-Picayune and was selected by Tulane for the university’s Fall Reading Project that same year.

Sancton grew up in New Orleans. After studies at Harvard and Oxford, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar, he began a 22-year career as a writer, editor, and foreign correspondent for Time Magazine, serving most recently as Paris Bureau Chief. In August 2007, feeling the tug of his roots, Sancton returned to live in New Orleans after a long residence in France in order to take up the Andrew W. Mellon professorship at Tulane, where he currently teaches creative writing.

Preservation Hall is the main venue of this coming-of-age memoir; Sancton’s relationship with the old jazz musicians, who called themselves “the mens,” is the central theme. Most of the original “mens” are long since departed, but the current Preservation Hall players are their successors in carrying forward the New Orleans jazz tradition. The performance at Le Chat Noir is not merely a literary reading, but a unique stage performance that shifts between words and music, past and present, memory and experience.

The evolution of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band into a conveyer of hip is one of the musical successes of post-K culture. We can no longer point to the band (or the hall) as simply a bastion of tradition; we must recognize it as an innovator of tradition. As invaluable as his father’s contributions were to our culture, Ben Jaffe is quite important to the now.

On their new collaboration with the Del McCoury Band, we find the band swinging with and around McCoury’s silky tenor. Though it’s doubtful anyone in the world was losing sleep over the dangers of mixing bluegrass with trad, this isn’t a simple suture job. Wicked mandolin runs, clarinets in skyward races with fiddles, percussive banjoes and snares—this is one mean band. Check out “Banjo Frisco” for some very new/old music.

McCoury and family have shared the stage with Phish and recorded with Steve Earle, making them as accustomed to crossover as the current Pres Hall. More importantly, we’re listening to two types of traditional music that blossomed alongside each other in the first half of the 20th Century, nurtured by two different sets of poor folks—urban African Americans and rural whites—who shared a talent to swing and a fondness for celebration and mourning. Everything comes down to blues and banjoes, after all.

The wise move here was to allow Mark Braud and Clint Maedgen to sing lead almost as often as McCoury, and thus really test out the conflagration. “The Sugar Blues” hands you a what-if question involving Bob Wills and Fats Waller, Grand Ole Opry and Preservation Hall, 1931 and 2011. Good answers abound.

Featuring live and behind-the-scenes photographs by award-winning New Orleans art photographer Shannon Brinkman and in-depth interviews with Preservation Hall Musicians by Eve Abrams, Preservation Hall documents the present day of this legendary, multi-generational group of jazz musicians and the small room in New Orleans’ French Quarter that they’ve continued to play in for the last 50 years.

About Shannon Brinkman:
Shannon Brinkman is a sought after fine art photographer. She has won International awards such as the Annual Photographer's Forum contest and been included in many exhibitions in National galleries and museums like the New Orleans Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts (Tallahassee, FL), Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art, Albany Museum of Art as well as the Alexandria Museum of Art. Her work on Preservation Hall was also chosen and exhibited in the Fotofest biennial in 2010. In November 2011 the Lousiana State Museum will present an exhibition on Preservation Hall with a feature on Brinkman's imagery.
Brinkman is also an International Sport Horse photographer and has represented the United State Equestrian Federation at the 2010 World Equestrian Games and for USEA at the Olympics and Pan American Games. Her images capture not only the action but have an artistic, and keen eye for the height of the moment.
Her work has been collected by the Tarragona Music Festival in Spain, Albany Museum of Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans Superbowl as well as many private collectors.

Aurora Nealand is a saxophonist and composer who has been based in New Orleans, LA since 2004. Celebrating jazz, country, gospel in a collaborative spirit

Bluegrass and New Orleans jazz came together at Symphony Hall Saturday as the Celebrity Series of Boston brought the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to town for a joyous and virtuosic celebration of their joint album due out next month, the aptly titled “American Legacies.’’

Ben Jaffe, whose parents founded Preservation Hall 50 years ago, came onstage with pianist Rickie Monie, who played some gentle stride as Jaffe introduced the other five members of the band, the horn players each blowing a short, personable solo en route to their chairs. Del McCoury (who was playing in Baltimore honky-tonks the year Preservation Hall opened, joining bluegrass titan Bill Monroe’s band in 1963) brought his group out to join them, and everyone finished off “Basin Street Blues.’’ A Jaffe original, “The Band’s in Town,’’ followed, featuring McCoury trading vocal lines with saxophonist Clint Maedgen and solos from Mark Braud on trumpet and McCoury’s son Ronnie on mandolin, and the table was set for an evening of mostly collaborative music.

There were brief separate sets as well. The McCoury band revisited “Rain and Snow,’’ tore through the instrumental “Rawhide,’’ and then slowed down for four-part vocal harmonizing on “Get Down on Your Knees and Pray.’’ The Preservation Hall bunch went it alone on “That’s a Plenty’’ and “Shake It and Break It,’’ with Braud explaining that the latter would feature “my mother’s favorite vocalist’’ filling in for Andrew Bird.

But the show primarily featured the two distinct dialects of indigenous American instrumental music genially feeling each other out on jazz, country, and gospel chestnuts. Some highlights: Maedgen adding his tenor to the McCoury band’s version of Ernest Tubb’s “You Don’t Have to Be a Baby to Cry,’’ Braud’s muted trumpet and vocals on “The Sugar Blues,’’ Charlie Gabriel’s clarinet and gravely vocals on “A Good Gal,’’ and Joe Lastie’s crowd-pleasing drum solo on the ostensible closer, “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.’’ And “Mullensburg Joys’’ effectively displayed its shared pedigree (Bill Monroe himself recorded the Jelly Roll Morton jazz standard as “Milenberg Joy’’) in a series of solos building to Gabriel trading licks with fiddler Jason Carter.

Maedgen sang a spirited “I’ll Fly Away’’ with Del McCoury as a first encore, then everyone trooped out one last time, the audience dancing along to a rousing “When the Saints Go Marching In.’’ American legacies, indeed.

SXSW is reigning down with full force now. The crowds are massive, and the density of party action is almost beyond reason. So, what else is there to do in Texas but celebrate New Orleans-style? Director Danny Clinch ensured a little bit of the French Quarter was delivered to Austin on Thursday with the screening of his new documentary film Live At Preservation Hall: Louisiana Fairytale. Clinch’s movie focuses on New Orleans jazz traditions, specifically the guys in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who have been playing music at 726 St. Peter Street in the French Quarter since the early ’60s.

Part of the New Orleans jazz tradition is to collaborate while moving forward; in this case, it meant the Preservation Hall group joined forces with Jim James and his band, My Morning Jacket. This pairing isn’t as unlikely as it first sounds, and Clinch did an expert job capturing the meeting of the two ensembles and their exciting, intimate performance down on St Peter Street. We also learn the history of the Preservation Hall and its members, gain insights into their musical lifestyle and watch the visiting members of My Morning Jacket absorb some of their enchantment.

To set the tone just before the film’s screening, Clinch wisely summoned the spirit of New Orleans down in Austin as the Preservation Hall Jazz Band suddenly appeared and circled the street in front of the Paramount Theater, playing a moving, grooving second-line parade for the waiting moviegoers and passers-by. The parade then continued inside the theater, which led to a dynamic performance of “St James Infirmary,” with a suit-clad James singing and moaning and throwing himself up against the theater seats and along the front of the stage. It’s clear that the musicians from the two groups had a great deal of respect for one another, and this movie is more of a celebration of the summit than anything else. Photographer Clinch is certainly growing as a director—he’s made concert films showcasing bands like Pearl Jam and John Mayer—and this might be his best yet...
